In Holy Sonnet 14 Donne is depicting the complex relationship between men and salvation by suggesting that there is a paradox that characterizes this relationship in order to illustrate the idea that although all humans are willing to have a prosperous after-life, there is always an inner impulse that keeps almost everyone from following "the right path", the one recommended for salvation.
The speakers relationship to not only salvation but to God is strained and limited by the speakers own actions and his human desires, he still however struggles willingly and pleads to God so that he can be helped, and become the person he wants to be.
