In Chapter 5 of Their Eyes Were Watching God the narrator comments that “any man who walks in the way of power and property is bound to meet hate.” In a well organized essay, defend or challenge this assertion. Use evidence from your reading, and/or experience to support your position.

Please have your dual entry journals ready for submission. There should be a minimum of 10 - 14 entries. Remember to follow the criteria from the blog and handout for the highest possible grade. And your character STEAL charts.

Writing Themes Homework - Due 11/12 Beginnging of class

Composing Themes about Literature

Using your handout on Theme and Topic Compose:

Answer all the bullet pointed questions three times. Make sure that you use details from the novel to support your answers. 

When you are finished with each set Compose a Thematic Statement that connects the author, character, the topic, and the essential truth about human nature or what it means to be human that is revealed in the text of the novel (you will have three, but feel free to write more).


Use this frame to compose your statements - 

 

Through Janie Hurston (verb about writing) (topic) in order to reveal that all humans (truth statement about human nature and what it means to be human).

 Verbs about writing are:explores, critiques, illustrates, depicts, punctuates, illuminates, expresses, portrays, characterizes

Substitute your writing for the things in parentheses and you'll have a statement.

Late and Missing Work

Scholars, this is a one time deal. Look up the word AMNESTY and you will understand.  I am offering amnesty for the submission of missing, and late work you are holding hostage. There is a penalty, but anything is better than a 0, right?

Homework for 11/05

Read Ch. 19 & 20. Compose three level 4 and/or level five questions to be discussed in class Thursday. This is your last chance for the 6 weeks to improve your Socratic Circle grade. I will be looking for those who need to contribute to make significant, relevant contributions.

Compose 2 more journal entries. I will be taking a sneak peek at your journal assignments on Thursday.

Extra Credit

If you would like extra credit, come to my room and get an Article of the Week. Read and annotate the article, Compose a one page Reflection  (that also addresses the 1st bullet point at the end of the article), and submit A Completely answered SOAPStone chart with your work(I have the handout in my room as well by the front door). I will accept it any time before Friday afternoon. If you need SOAPStone help I am here before and after school every day.
