Othello - Log Due 5/1

1. What are your impressions of Othello and Desdemona's relationship? How do they feel about their love for each other? How does each characterize their love? Use brief quotes from each to support your answer.

2. What are your 1st impressions of Desdemona? What kind of a woman is she? Find a quote that captures her character and explain why you chose this quote.

3.Find a picture of your Desdemona for your journal and explain why you chose her.

4. If you were a Director where would you place Iago after he re-enters with Desdemona? Why?
5. Word  Study / Search - Complete word search through Act 1, scene 3, line 385 (1st period - your words will be assigned Friday)
Your study should include - the act, scene and line, the person saying it, the quote, and the context of meaning. when you reach 1.3.385 total the # of times the word is used and by whom.

Othello Homework for 4/29

1. In your own words, explain what happened in 1.2

2. Answer the following questions for your log -

A. 1st impressions – Is he what you thought he’d be? Is he respected by his associates? How do you know?

B. What contrasts are there between the way Iago, Roderigo, and Branbantio have described Othello and the way he looks and behaves when he actually appears?

C. What is the difference in attitude between Cassio and Iago in their short conversation following Othello’s exit?

D. Why is Branbantio convinced that Othello must have used witchcraft on his daughter? Why does he have difficulty believing his daughter could run to Othello’s “sooty bosom”?

E. Describe Othello as you see him in your imagination. Which type of actor would you choose to play the role? Find a picture online or in a magazine that resembles your Othello and put it in your journal.

F. Iago swears in line 38 “By Janus”. Janus is a Roman two-faced god. Give examples of Iago’s two-faced behavior, How might an actor convey this?
