1st Period - Reading and Journaling due Friday

Dialectical Journal Note - Your journal should have 6 - 10 entries per chapter. The should consist of a variety of entry types taken from your journal handout. PLEASE, color code the entries and provide a key in the front of your journal.

 

Reading - Please Read through Chapter 8 . . . If you have questions (ie. questions about character, culture, tribal customs), bring them to class so we can work to answer them.

Dialectical Journal - Complete Through at least Chapter 8.

8th Period - Reading and Journaling due 10/13

Substitute Assignment- 1st Period - Due at the end of class

Due at the End of Class - Complete on separate sheet of paper and follow the instructions.

Please answer the following questions in at least four complete sentences each.

Chapter 3:

1.      What is the meaning of Chika’s statement to Unoka (Okonkwo’s father) that “when a man is at peace with his gods and ancestors, his harvest will be good or bad according to the strength of his arm”?

2.      Do you believe people should be rewarded for hard work? Why or why not? Do you think all hard work is rewarded? Why or why not? Provide examples.

3.      How does Okonkwo feel about his father? Why? Provide two quotes that show this feeling. 

4.      Should children be dutiful and loving to their parents under any circumstance? Why or why not?

Chapter 4:

5.      Describe Okonkwo’s personality. Using examples from the chapter, characterize Okonkwo’s beliefs and actions.

6.      Should people who are angry and judgemental be allowed to succeed? Why or why not?
 
7.      Who is Ikemefuna?

8.      Can people who are not your relatives be family? Why or why not? If yes, how does this happen?

Chapter 5

9.      Why doesn’t Okonkwo like feasts? What does this say about his character’s personality? Find another sentence in the book that supports this claim.

10.   In chapter 5, Okonkwo’s anger gets the best of him. Cite the two instances when he acts violently. Why does he behave this way?
   
11.   Describe Okonkwo’s daughter Ezinma. How does she act?
