Due Friday 8/28

Voice Lesson Extension

1. In your composition book - Think about how you would paint a self-portrait. What colors would you use? What expression would you have on your face? How would you be dressed? What kind of background would you have? Would you have anything else in the portrait besides yourself? What would these things say about you? Make a simple sketch of yourself and write a few sentences describing what your self-portrait would look like.

2. Please complete the voice lesson from class, then on the back of the handout: Write a sentence describing a small boy making a mess in a restaurant. Choose words that are clear, concrete, and exact.

 1984

3. Think about the concrete details and specific diction of Chapter 1 in 1984 –
A) What do we learn about Winston Smith (what kind of a man is he?). Be specific in your analysis and use concrete details to support your answer,
B) What do the details of Chapter 1 communicate about the society Smith lives in? Again, be specific in your support.
