STAAR Resources - Last Minute RX

STAAR 911 RX

ALL of you have worked hard to excel tomorrow. Personally, I think you will all perform much better than last year. I HAVE complete FAITH in each of you and what we've learned.

I know some of you are still probably worried about the essay tomorrow, so I've put some resources for you in the DROPBOX

STAAR HELP

Included are prompts and scoring guides/writing samples for 2014 and 2013 (today's prompt was 2013). Read the high scoring essays and the commentary by the graders. Make note of what they do and use it.

I've also included the 2014 and 2015 Reading Exams with answer keys if you'd like a last minute prep. Choose a passage of two, answer the questions, and check your answers.

Finally - Here's a link to that Prep Video we watched - Remember the strategy:

BOX your Prompt: Underline Read, Think, Write

     T-Chart: Pro/Con 3 Pros, 2 Cons (choose 2 pro/1 con)

    1. State your position clearly! (Thesis)

    2. Reason #1 (also the topic sentence for 1st Body Paragraph)

3.Reason #2 (also the topic sentence for 2nd Body Paragraph)

    4. Combine for FINAL Thesis (3 in 1)

Stop! Answer Reading Passage #1

Go Back to Essay and DRAFT!

Write Intro with Hook and Thesis

FEED Reason #1 and write paragraph

FEED Reason #2 and write paragraph with counter

Restate your Thesis without saying "in conclusion" and remember to have a call to action (why it's important)

STOP!!!! TAKE 5!

Go Back to the Reading Questions, preview the Short Answers AND Preview Questions before you read each Passage. Answer all questions and bubble as you go. Pre-write short answers before writing in the BOXES  APES: ANSWER! PROVIDE EVIDENCE, EXPLAIN, SUMMARIZE.

GO Back to your PERSUASIVE ESSAY Draft and Read it. Add words, correct grammar, check transitions, and spelling.

Write ESSAY IN COMPOSITION BOX.

Now finish strong with "Editing and Revising"

YOU GOT THIS!!
